Why monolingual reception costs revenue

Switzerland's multilingualism on the phone

Language barriers at reception

A monolingual receptionist in Zurich does not understand the Geneva client. The call ends in a callback from a colleague — or with the competitor who speaks French.

Tourist calls go unanswered

Hotels, gastronomy, and tourism providers lose bookings because reception does not speak English, Italian, or Spanish — or not confidently enough to book.

Dialects confuse voice systems

Classic speech IVR systems fail on Bernese or Valaisan German. Callers have to repeat themselves, drop out — and leave a poor impression.

What changes

How fonea turns language diversity into strength

Automatic language detection

fonea recognises within the first seconds which language the call is in and replies in the same language without any switching — German, French, Italian, English, or Spanish.

Swiss German understood

Zurich, Bern, Basel, Valais, and Central Swiss dialects are reliably recognised. Replies are in Swiss Standard German — correct, clear, respectful.

Customer preference stored

fonea recognises returning customers by phone number and greets them in their stored preferred language — even if the initial greeting was multilingual.

How we configure multilingualism for your SMB

01

Define languages

We clarify which languages you actively want to offer. Default: DE, FR, IT, EN — IT and ES on request. For each language we draft greeting, standard answers, and escalation paths.

02

Dialect coverage

We train fonea with typical Swiss dialects and your industry's terminology — so the Bernese tradesperson and the Valaisan restaurateur are understood reliably.

03

Handover logic per language

You define per language who takes over calls if a person is requested. French calls go to the French-speaking colleague.

04

Test calls and go-live

Test calls in every configured language, fine-tuning of answers, then call forwarding. Changes are yours to make at any time.

Typical multilingual calls

How fonea sounds in practice

French-speaking Geneva client calls Zurich accountant

Anrufer
Bonjour, c'est Monsieur Dubois de Genève. J'aimerais prendre un rendez-vous avec mon fiduciaire pour la déclaration d'impôts."
fonea
Bonjour Monsieur Dubois, avec plaisir. Votre conseiller, Madame Bernhard, est disponible mercredi prochain à 10 heures ou jeudi à 14 heures. Quelle option vous convient le mieux ?"

French call from Romandy, French reply, appointment booked in the Zurich office — no French-speaking team member needs to be available.

Swiss German call from a Bernese trades customer

Anrufer
Grüessech, ig hätti gärn es Offert für e Badezimmer-Umbou. Chöit dr öppis mache bis Ändi vom Monet?"
fonea
Grüezi, happy to help. We have an on-site measurement slot next Tuesday at 10 am or Thursday at 2 pm, about 60 minutes on site. Which works better — and may I have your address?"

Bernese dialect in, friendly Swiss Standard German out, clean appointment flow with address capture.

English-speaking tourist calls a Lucerne hotel

Anrufer
Hi, I am calling from London. I would like to book a double room for next weekend, Friday to Sunday, for two adults."
fonea
Good morning. Happy to help. We have a double room with lake view available from Friday check-in 3 pm to Sunday check-out 11 am at CHF 320 per night. May I have the name for the reservation and an email for the confirmation?"

English guest, fluent reply including CHF pricing, automatic email confirmation in English — no interpreter at reception needed.

Language quality at Swiss standard

Why fonea is truly multilingual

Native-level quality per language

For each language we use specialised language models and Swiss voices (TTS). The result sounds natural — not like a translated script.

No more IVR menus

fonea does not ask "For English press 1". Language is detected from the first words. Faster, more polite, and natural.

Fallback on misunderstanding

If fonea is uncertain, it politely asks again in the detected language. If doubt remains, fonea hands over to a human — not to an endless loop.

Data hosted in Switzerland

Frequently asked

What to know about fonea's multilingualism

Which languages and dialects does fonea understand?

fonea understands High German, Swiss Standard German, all common Swiss dialects (Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lucerne, Valais, Eastern Swiss German), French (including Suisse romande), Italian (including Ticino varieties), English, and Spanish. For very regional varieties such as Valaisan German we fine-tune during onboarding.

How does fonea detect the language — automatically or does the caller choose?

Fully automatic. fonea starts with a bilingual greeting (e.g. "Grüezi, bonjour") and identifies the language from the first answer. From there the entire call continues in the detected language. No IVR menu, no key press, no waiting.

Is quality the same across languages?

Quality is near-equivalent in DE, FR, and EN, very good in IT and ES. For strongly dialectal Swiss German we combine multiple models fine-tuned for Switzerland. We measure comprehension per language and iterate where needed.

What happens when there are comprehension problems?

fonea politely asks again in the detected language ("Sorry, could you repeat that?"). If uncertainty persists after two tries, fonea hands over to a human on your team and passes the transcript — so the caller is not trapped in a loop.

How does fonea handle strong accents — e.g. English from a German guest or Italian from southern Italy?

The underlying models are trained on global language varieties. Accents from Germany, Austria, France, Italy, UK, USA, and India are reliably recognised. Edge cases — very strong dialects — trigger the escalation fallback.

Can I configure different staff per language for handover?

Yes. You define the escalation path per language: French calls to Madame Pellet, Italian to Signore Rossi, English to the hotline group. The mapping is fully configurable.

Does fonea recognise customers by number and pick their preferred language?

Yes. If the customer has called before and their language was detected, fonea stores the preference. On the next call, fonea greets directly in the preferred language — feels personal, saves time.

Does fonea work in Ticino and Romandy too?

Yes. fonea is built for all of Switzerland. Italian calls from Ticino, French from Romandy, and German from the German-speaking region all run equivalently. Hosting is in Switzerland, phone numbers are available nationwide.
